    Hi members,

It’s competition time again … and this time City Speakers aim to do it right. We want to get the club prepared to win some honours.

Over the next month we will be selecting champion evaluators, table topics speakers and prepared speakers to represent the club at the Area Finals and beyond.

The club competitions will be organised as a two round occasion, so that the club winners will be doubly experienced before going on to Area Finals.

    *** EVALUATION CONTEST ***

These will take place on Tuesday 5th February (next week !!!) and Tue 19th February. FOUR PLACES ONLY in each heat. First come, first served. Two evaluators from each heat will qualify for the final on 18th March.

Email me URGENTLY if you want to participate.

    *** TABLE TOPICS CONTEST ***

4th March. On this evening we will be holding several table topics heats to select 4 finalists to go forward to the final on 18th March.

    *** SPEECH CONTEST ***

Heats of up to 8 speakers on 4th March, selecting 3 finalists to repeat their speeches on 18th March. YOU CAN REPEAT A PREVIOUS SPEECH. Alternatively, you can try a brand new speech. If you have a speech to hand you think is a winning speech then email me. If you have won a Best Speech of the Evening award over the last year, then email me. If you want to recommend a good speech by another member that you’ve heard at a meeting, then email me. I want a full complement of 8 speeches in this heat. No excuses. You don’t even need to write a new speech. Just do it again, but better !

*** WHAT YOU NEED TO DO ***

Email me [John Campbell] now telling me which competition(s) you want to compete in. All paid up members will be expected to take part in at least one contest, or send me an excuse why not. I will chase each of you individually if I don’t hear from you.

*** URGENT ACTION *** Evaluators for next Tuesday’s Evaluation heat.

Be excited, cos this year is going to be the year City Speakers win at the Area Finals.

    Members’ Party

    December 18, 2007
    6:45 pm

You’re invited to the City of London Speakers club annual party. It’s on our usual date in a familiar venue, but with a twist. It’ll be a light-hearted evening with a “Christmas Buffet”, a few table topics, a few drinks, and a good deal of fun.

The club will buy dinner for all members in good standing. (If you’ve lapsed a little, we’d still like to see you again!) Bring guests if you like, for a only a tenner each (That’s 10GBP for those of you in finance).

WHAT YOU NEED TO DO NOW: If you’re able to come, or think that you will, let me know so that I can confirm numbers to the caterer. Similarly, if you’ll be bringing guests, give us an idea as to how many. If you’re not sure, just let me know what you’re thinking and confirm before the day. Thank-you.

    Meeting Cancelled

Sadly we lost our venue at the last minute tonight. Owing to the season, and to the lack of notice, we were unable to arrange a replacement. Thanks to all those who stopped by — we hope to see you in the new year. Here’s wishing you a stress-free holiday season.

Our next Regular Meeting will be on the 15th of January, because of New Year’s Day.

P.S. we spent our beer money in a delightful little pub around the corner, The Magpie, on New Street just opposite the station.

    Toastmasters : Division B contest : 15th November

    November 15, 2007
    6:30 pm

    Dear Area 31.
last night I was a proud parent as two of our area competed at division level.  Joanne Chan and David Thompson both from CWC eventually both came runner up in their respective competitions.  The standard was high and Ex-district governor Nick Benning described the division as the power-house of the district. Please join me in congratulating the two of them.  The winners of the competitions were:

    Jonathan Palmer - Humorous speech
    Andrew Klimaytis - Table topics

Lets see if we can make the next competition in six months time an even more stunning success

The competition starts at 7:30, and there are educational segments from 6:00. All are welcome, no pre-registration required.

If you’re interested in being a Judge, kindly let me or Dave Brooks know.

Bill Moss did very well at the Area Competition, and very nearly won the Table Topics contest. In fact, David Thompson won it by bringing a stunning amount of structure to his impromptu speech. Also, Joanne Chow’s brilliantly funny speech, In Short, is not to be missed.

An excellent opportunity to see the best speakers in London. Five humorous speeches plus Table Topics and some education. How could you ask for more? — Dave Brooks, Area 31 Governor

You’re welcome to bring friends and family, we just need to get you on

tomorrow with a list of names, and I’ll make sure they get to the folks

    Our Humorous Speech Competition

    October 2, 2007
    6:45 pmto9:00 pm

Roll up, roll up! The City of London Toastmasters Club is holding its annual humorous speech competition on the 2nd of October. A bit late in the day, since the Area Competition is just two days later. But if you’ve got a funny story to tell, and can spin it out for a few minutes, we’d love to hear it.

We’re also in need of Judges and other functionaries, so if you’re interested in playing a part without getting up to speak, contact our Vice President of Education, Funmi Ogun.

All members are eligible to enter the competition. There’s also a Table Topics competition and possibly an Evaluation competition, too…

Humorous Speech Competition — Toastmasters Area 31

    October 4, 2007
    6:30 pm

Come one, come all. It’s the City of London Toastmasters competition winners, alongside winners of other clubs in our area. Still looking for judges and functionaries.

It’s at Credit Suisse, courtesy of our area governor Dave Brooks. Details to follow.

Dave’s a bit frustrated with us, which is probably my fault. If you’re interested in playing a part on the big evening, let me know and I’ll put you in contact with Dave:

    Fellow area leaders,
The area governor is a little frustrated (that’s me) as offers of assistance for organising the area competition have been thin on the ground. I have organised a room and nibbles, I have two hosts. I need sergeant at arms, timer and judges. I could also do with an organiser as that two days around the competition I will be out of the office on business and will not be able to sort out the necessary access to the building. I will be asking my club on Tuesday at our relaunch for help, but until then, offers of further assistance would be appreciated.

    Dave Brooks; Area Governor Visit

    September 18, 2007

The Governor of Area 31, Dave Brooks, will pay his semi-annual visit on our last meeting in September. We should have our Distinguished Club Plan in place by this time, so that he can report favourably to Toastmasters International. Also, we need an indication of which members we think might complete their programme of 10 speeches or 10 leadership tasks…

[update] Postponed, as Dave has had a high-speed collision and fractured a few bits.  Lets all wish him a speedy recovery.

    Table Topics at Speakers Corner

Broadgate Speakers are holding this special event in Hyde Park on Sunday the 16th of September.

Have you ever wanted to speak in the birthplace of free speech? This Sunday, you will have the support and encouragement of toastmaster from around London for your initiation at Speakers Corner. Using a table topics format, everyone attending will be able to have their minute of fame and experience a totally different and real environment of speaking literally in public.

Perhaps this is a taste of your future public roles? A memory that you can dine out on? A chance to socialise with other clubs? Or simply to improve your confidence?

With the last of the summer, we will then enjoy Hyde Park with a picnic and play rounders for the rest of the afternoon. An ideal way to meet some new friends and find out what other clubs are doing.

    June Newsletter

The District 71 Newsletter is out. Our Area Governor, Dave Brooks, has an article in it this month.

    Welcome to the Blog

Fellow members and most welcome guests, this blog is for you. It will help us in maintaining a record of past meetings, in sharing our experiences and insights, and in communicating amongst ourselves and with the world.

As each of you takes part in a meeting, kindly think of sharing your thoughts, feelings, and experiences here on the blog. Grammarians can post their chosen word of the day, speakers can share the text or substance of their speeches, and role-takers can give insight into how best to perform. Each of us will have something poignant occur to us during a meeting, and I invite you to use this place to tell all of us.
